General Presentation Instructions
Preparing for a Presentation
Prepare for your presentation by practicing until you feel comfortable
with the material. How much time do you have? How long did your practice
take? How much time is left for activities? (Be sure you also familiarize
yourself in advance with the activities that you will be leading.) Think
about how you might need to modify the presentation or activities to fit
the time available. The “Presentation Notes” are not a script
that you must follow; rather, they are simply suggestions for elaborating
upon the slides as you present them. Think of other ways that you can
do that: don’t be afraid to customize your presentation to suit
your needs, or those of your audience. In the “Primary
Sources” presentation, for example, you might wish to insert
materials that are familiar to you (and are therefore easier to elaborate
upon), or share materials appropriate to the grade levels of the teachers
you’re presenting to. Prepare your audience as well, if possible
– have them bring copies of the History-Social Science Content Standards
to your presentation, as some of the activities will entail working with
the Standards.
Where do I go from here?
You need to decide whether make your presentation directly from
the Teacher Leader Toolkit, using a computer and projector, or simply
use overheads. If you make overheads, be sure to use transparencies
that are compatible with your printer. Check printer manufacturers
nomenclature or media types if you are unsure. You will also need
to prepare handouts. Although handouts are included with some presentations,
it will be up to you to produce others from the "Road to Constitution"
unit (if directed to do so in the appropriate "Presentation
Notes"), as well as what is probably
the most useful handout - pages reproducing each of the slides in
your presentation. In addition you will need to print materials
for the activities that go with each presentation.
Good luck, and have fun! If you have questions, or comments you would
like to share, feel free to contact us.
